Virgie Ellen Clayton, 81, was born on September 22, 1940, to Floyd and Gladys Hicks. On June 19, 2022, she decided it was time to reunite with them. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by friends and loved ones in her own bed.
Virgie had many accomplishments in her life, but her favorite was earning the title of Mom to her four children, Donita, Raeonda, Don (Suzanne), & Ronnie (Tracy) and Maw Maw to all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her favorite hobbies were reading, crossword puzzles, and watching Golden Girls with her side kick, Pugsley.
To know Virgie was to love her. She was funny, sassy, strong, and wise. She always knew what to say to make everything okay again. I (Arika) was allowed 300 words for her obituary, but how can I describe the best human God ever created in so few words? It isn’t enough… our time with her wasn’t enough… but I guess there is no good time to say goodbye to such a beautiful soul. So, I’ll leave you with this, her favorite poem:
“Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumns rain
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight
I am the soft stars that shine at night
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die”
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2022, from Noon to 1:00pm. Bishop Ron Webb will say a few words to conclude the visitation at 1:00pm.
