Velma C. Hill, 83, of Poplar Bluff, formerly resided in Kankakee, IL for 42 years, died May 25, 2006 at the Cedargate Nursing Home. Mrs. Hill was born February 27, 1923 to the late John Torrence and Eula (Christian) Gilmore in Poplar Bluff. She was retired after working for 24 years at the Riverside Medical Center as a Switchboard Supervisor and previously worked at Southwestern Bell in Poplar Bluff.
Mrs. Hill was a member of the First Church of Nazarene in Kankakee and later a member of the First Church of God in Poplar Bluff. She enjoyed being with her family, cooking, and reading.
On March 16, 1945 she was married to Lee Hill in Marion, IL and he preceded her in death on Dec. 12, 1997.
Surviving are 1 daughter, Sharon Lagacy and husband Gerald of St. Anne, IL; 1 son, Roger Hill of Poplar Bluff; 3 grandchildren, Eric Lagacy of Poplar Bluff; Adam Lagacy and wife Laura of Mackinaw, IL; Sayword Edwards and husband Paul of Murphysboro, IL; and 5 great grandchildren, Mercedees, Deion, Bryson, KayLee, and Brandon; and a sister-in-law, Donna Gilmore of Puxico.
Also preceding her in death was a grandson Bryan ""Opie"" Lagacy in Jan. 2000; a sister-in-law, Vera Gilmore; 3 brothers, Curtis Gilmore, Floyd Gilmore and Versie Gilmore.
Visitation will be at 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Richard Triplett officiating. Burial will be in the City Cemetery.
