Sandlin W. Barton, 87, of Poplar Bluff died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006 at his residence.

Mr. Barton was born Dec. 10, 1918, in Poplar Bluff, to the late Benjamin Franklin and Naomi (Hodge) Barton. He was a member of the First Church of God, where he taught the age group of 8-12 year olds Sunday School class for many years. Mr. Barton was the retired owner and operator of the Anderson Home Furnishings, of Poplar Bluff and a member of the Poplar Bluff Kiwanis Club, where he was voted Man of the Year, in 1991. He was also a World War II veteran of the United States Navy, being awarded two Asiatic Pacific Stars, an American Area Medal, a Victory Medal and a Philippine Liberation Medal.

On Dec. 21, 1936, known as the longest calendar evening of that year, he married Margaret Anderson, in Poplar Bluff. She survives.

Other survivors include four children, Ruth Ann Diamond, and Allan Barton and wife Vicki, all of Poplar Bluff, Sandra Lee Hobbs and husband Ernest, of Tullahoma, Tenn., and Bernard Barton and wife Cheryl, of Tokyo, Japan; 10 grandchildren, Steven Diamond, Lt. Colonel Keven Diamond, Leeann Hobbs, Ernie Hobbs, David Hobbs, Kirk Barton, Roseanna Jones, Sarah Hickey, Ben Barton and Stephanie Lyndoh; 11 great-grandchildren, Luke Diamond, Bethany Diamond, Trey Hobbs, Meghan Hobbs, Ian Hobbs, Caroline Barton, Kaleb Barton, Destanee Barton, Landon Barton, Lilliann Jones, and Layne Jones; and a sister, Anita Schamadeke, of Keokuk, Iowa.

A granddaughter, Jennifer Barton, three brothers and three sisters also preceded Mr. Barton in death.

Visitation will be from 6 - 8 p.m. Sunday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel, in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the funeral chapel with the Rev. Bernard Barton officiating and the Rev. Richard Triplett assisting. Burial, with full military honors will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery, in Poplar Bluff.
