Rose Marie Barbour

Rose Marie Hammons Barbour was born on September 1, 1926 to Edgar Garfield and Muriel Leila Hay Hammons at their home in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. She died on June 18, 2008. A lifelong resident of Poplar Bluff, she attended school at Mark Twain, Kinyon and Williamson Kennedy Elementary schools and graduated from Poplar Bluff Senior High in May of 1944. She attended Southeast Missouri State College and the University of Missouri at Columbia where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi social sorority.
On December 28, 1945 she was married to her childhood sweetheart, Marvin Ray Barbour, son of Mr. & Mrs. John Leo Barbour, also of Poplar Bluff, in Berkeley, California. They lived in Columbia and St. Louis where Dr. Barbour completed his medical training before returning to Poplar Bluff.
Mrs. Barbour was an active member of the First United Methodist Church. She was active in the Cotton Boll Girl Scout Council as a troop leader for many years and later as a Council Vice President. She received the Thanks Badge from the Council in 1975. She was a volunteer for the Margaret Harwell Art Museum and was herself an artist. She volunteered at the Doctors Hospital in the Gift Shop and was a surgery waiting room support person. She was a member of the Cane Creek Community Club and she was a mentor for Claudia Girls and Charlie Classics.
Mrs. Barbour was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar Garfield and Muriel L. Hammons, her husband, Dr. Marvin Barbour, and a grandson, Andrew Barbour. She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Dr. Bob and Jane Walters of Austin, Texas, Dr. Dan and Alice Barbour of Poplar Bluff, Rev. David and Rose Ann Huck of Marshall, Missouri and Kevin and Tonya Barbour of Poplar Bluff, and grandchildren, David Walters, Brian Walters and wife, Cathy Doggett, Sarah Walters, Benjamin Barbour, Aaron Barbour, Joel Barbour, Samantha and husband, Corey Klotz, Jessica Blessing, Katie and husband, Adam Bertrand, Leslie and husband, Joe Reasbeck and their children, Jay, Nathan and Mark, and Kevin Barbour, Jr. and wife Traci, and their children, Taylor, Kaylee and Kevin III.
The family wishes to acknowledge and honor the excellent care given Mrs. Barbour by her physicians, Dr. Kirby Turner and Dr. Ken Li, and devoted caretakers, Revia Wade, Marian Lindner, Alice Walker and Ms. Walkers daughters, Christina, Melinda and Jennie. Both her life and the family's lives were enriched by their friendship and the skill with which they cared for our dear Mother when she could no longer care for herself.
Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m. Friday, June 20 at the Cotrell Funeral Chapel. Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2008, with the Reverend Kurt Schuermann officiating. Burial will be in the City Cemetery.
Memorial donations for Mrs. Barbour can be made to First United Methodist Church in Poplar Bluff or the Poplar Bluff Public Library.
