Retha Mae Smothers, 79, of Poplar Bluff passed away Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Smothers was born April 22, 1928, in Butler County. She was a member of South Poplar Bluff General Baptist Church, and was a retired sales lady for Swanks Dress Shop. Mrs. Smothers enjoyed spending time with her family.
On March 8, 1946, she married Bartley Smothers, in Pocahontas, Ark. He preceded her in death on March 10, 2005.
Survivors include her son, Roger Smothers and wife Barbara, of Poplar Bluff; grandchildren, Carrie Elizabeth Smothers and Justin Smothers; great-grandchildren, Riley Smothers and Kirsten Durrow; brother, Carl Wheelis and wife Janet, of Lakeland, Fla.; sister-in-laws, Mildred Wheelis, of Lakeland Fla., Opal Spencer, Naomi Bishop and Eva Fox, all of Poplar Bluff; and nieces and nephews.
Her parents, John Walter and Ella (Cotner) Wheelis, daughter, Sandra Kay Smothers, and brothers, Leonard Wheelis and Leon Wheelis also preceded her in death.
Visitation will be from 6 - 8 p.m. Sunday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel, in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at South Poplar Bluff General Baptist Church with the Rev. Keith Luke officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Gardens Cemetery, in Poplar Bluff.
