Oscar G. Hopson

Oscar G. Hopson, Jr., 86, of Poplar Bluff died Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at The Hospice of East Texas, in Tyler, Tex.

Mr. Hopson was born Oct. 19, 1921, in Casper, Wyo. He was a former active member of Good Hope Methodist Church where he had served as a Deacon, and had retired from the United States Army Air Force after 25 years of service. Before completely retiring, Mr. Hopson worked as a youth counselor for the Sears Youth Center. He was an avid Missouri football and basketball fan and most recently became an avid North Carolina fan. Mr. Hopson enjoyed being outdoors, doing yard work and feeding the birds and squirrels.

On April 29, 1951, he married Wilma Waggoner at her grandmother's home, in Coon Island, Mo. She preceded him in death on March 19, 2006.

Survivors include two sons, Dale Hopson, of New York, NY and Brad Hopson and wife Carla, of Whitehouse, Tex.; three grandchildren, Ashley Hopson, Brandon Hopson and Connor Hopson; three brothers-in-law, Frank Waggoner and wife Lawanda, of Burleson, Tex. and their daughter and son Paula and Max; Charles Waggoner and wife Joyce, of Poplar Bluff and their daughter, Linda; and Ray Waggoner and wife Kathy, of Lady Lake, Fla. and their daughters, May and Suzie; and nieces, Candace Soza, of Eugene, Oreg., and Debra Schroeder, of Grants Pass, Oreg.

His parents, Oscar G. and Mary Edith (Downs) Hopson, Sr. and a sister, Edith preceded him in death.

Visitation will be from 6 - 8 p.m. Sunday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel, in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jim Schremp officiating. Burial will be at Fairdealing Cemetery, in Fairdealing.
