Lila Irene Dennis

Lila I. Dennis, 90, of Poplar Bluff, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007 at the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center, in Poplar Bluff.

Mrs. Dennis was born Sept. 5, 1916, in Poynor to the late Willie and May (Pennington) Magruder. She was a member of the First General Baptist Church and a retired L.P.N. at the Lucy Lee Convalescent Center. Mrs. Dennis was a veteran of the United States Army and a member of the D.A.V. She enjoyed spending time with her family, flower gardening, reading and sewing.

On July 3, 1947, she married Delbert S. Dennis, Sr. in Battle Creek, MI. He preceded her in death on Sept. 6, 2006.

Survivors include two children, Kathe Hapanowicz and husband Robert and Delbert Dennis, Jr. and wife Rebecca, all of Poplar Bluff; four grandchildren, Amy Whelchel and husband William, Delbert Dennis, III and Angela Dennis, of Poplar Bluff and Elizabeth Sanders and husband Randy, of South Carolina; and six great-grandchildren, Shelby, Chelsy, Wesley, and Caleb Whelchel, of Poplar Bluff and Layton and Lydian Sanders, of South Carolina; two sisters, Hilda Martin, of Doniphan and Elaine Pierce, of St. Louis; and two brothers, Clifton Magruder, of Roodhouse, Ill. and Deford Magruder, of Bridgeton.

A grandson Daniel Dennis, also preceded Mrs. Dennis in death.

Visitation will be from 6 - 8 p.m. Thursday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel, in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the chapel, with the Rev. Bob Case officiating and the Rev. Keith Luke assisting. Burial with military honors will be at the City Cemetery, in Poplar Bluff.
