Leslie Godbey Brooks

October 27, 1913 — November 4, 2006

Leslie Godbey Brooks, 93, of Poplar Bluff, died Saturday, Nov. 4th, 2006 at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center after complications of congestive heart failure.

Mr. Brooks was born Oct. 27, 1913, in St. Louis. He graduated from Logansport, Ind. High School and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. A veteran of the United States Navy during World War II, Mr. Brooks was also a member of the Aviation Radio Squadron where he was awarded several Air Medals during his service. He had retired from the Federal Government after 33 years of service, and during his tenure he received numerous awards and commendations. After retirement, he worked for the Veterans of Foreign Wars for five years and volunteered at Twin Towers Senior Center where he received a service award for his dedication and many years of volunteer services. Mr. Brooks was of the Episcopal faith and attended Church services on a regular basis at the Rivermist Assisted Living Center, where he resided for the past two years. Mr. Brooks was an avid tennis player and after many years of participation, he retired the game and became a loyal spectator. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed visiting the Poplar Bluff Public Library, working crossword puzzles and exercising.

He married the former Helen C. Helvey, in Poplar Bluff. She survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Laura Y. Walker, of Chesterfield, Mo.; two sons, Richard L. Brooks and wife Martha, of Jonesboro, Ark., and Dennis P. Walker, of St. Louis, Mo.; 5 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law Peggy Walker, of Overland Park, Ks.

Preceding him in death were his parents Pearl (Godbey) and Frank Brooks, brother Frank, sister Grace, daughter Gloria and son Jerome (Jerry).

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7th at Cotrell Funeral Chapel, in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8th in the chapel, with Pastor Greg Gilberto officiating. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, in Poplar Bluff
