L. Sally Zumwalt, 90, longtime resident of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, passed away on Monday, October 28, 2024, at Westwood Hills Health and Rehabilitation Center. Sally was born in Danville, Arkansas on September 8, 1934, to Elmer and Dovie Martin.

Sally grew up on a farm in Rombauer, Missouri with two brothers and a sister. Sally graduated from Fisk-Rombauer High School in 1952 and married Robert Zumwalt, who was in the Air Force. After he ended his tour of duty, they settled in Poplar Bluff, where they remained during retirement. They loved to visit family and friends and camped and traveled the country in their RV making friends along the way.

Sally worked as a Library Assistant for the Poplar Bluff Public Schools. She instilled a love of reading in many children including her own. Sally was a Red Hat Lady, enjoyed water aerobics and playing Bunco. She loved her friends and her church dearly. She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff. Her grandchildren loved visiting and would spend time with her watching hummingbirds and catching frogs. Sally was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law, sister, and friend.

Preceding Sally in death are her husband, Robert Zumwalt; her parents, Elmer and Dovie Martin; and a brother, Sonny Martin. She is survived by her sister, Barbara Martin Hill (Gordon), of Springfield, IL, and brother, Jerry Martin (Tony), of Fisk, MO. She is also survived by her two children, Jean Hildebrandt (Art) of Chesapeake, VA, and Nathan Zumwalt of Poplar Bluff. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Ashley Hildebrandt (Jorge) and Andrew Hildebrandt (Jennifer), her five great grandchildren Liam, Ellie, Gavin, Adelyn, and Harper and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 10:30-11:30 am, with a memorial service following at 11:30 on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at Cotrell Willow Ridge Funeral and Cremation Services. There will be a private burial at Bloomfield Veterans Cemetery, where Sally will join her beloved husband at rest.

Donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Poplar Bluff.
