Inez ""Me Maw"" Proffer, 97, of Poplar Bluff went home to be with her Lord Sunday, Nov. 11, 2007.
Mrs. Proffer was born April 16, 1910, in Ellsinore, Mo. She was a long time resident of Poplar Bluff, and was a member of the Collins Chapel General Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and was a charter member of the Women's Missionary Society. Mrs. Proffer participated in all church services as long as her health allowed. She retired from the General Baptist Christian Book Center after 29 years of service.
On Oct. 6, 1928, she married Russell Proffer, in St. Louis. He preceded her in death on March 22, 1990.
Survivors include daughters, Norma Tipton Porch and her husband Floyd, Margaret Cross and Sue Sells, all of Poplar Bluff; son, Jerry Proffer and his wife Jeanie, of Poplar Bluff; nine grandchildren, Russell Lynn Tipton, Rickie Tipton, Larry Cross, Laddie Cross, Mark Sells, Cindy Seawright, Sharon Guethle, Paula Stucker and Lee Ann Brannum; 21 great-grandchildren, 20 great-great grandchildren; sister, Phyllis Freeze; of Ellsinore; brother, Ray Gaines and his wife Mary, of Ellsinore; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Proffer was preceded in death be her parents, W. H. and Iona (Shephard) Gaines; sisters, Edna, Ruth and Irma; brothers, Frank, Howard, Homer and Sherman; son-in-law, Ted Cross; great-granddaughter, Christina Sentell and great-grandson, Jessie Matthews.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel, in Poplar Bluff. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 11 a.m. in the Chapel with the Rev. Calvin Buhler officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens Cemetery, in Poplar Bluff.
