Hazel Madeline Cornelison, 97, of Poplar Bluff, died Monday, June 5, 2006 at the Cedargate Care Center, in Poplar Bluff.
Mrs. Cornelison was born Sept. 27, 1908, in Ridgeway to the late Frank and Ola May (Saunders) Rinehart. Receiving her B.S. and Masters Degree in education, she began her teaching career at the Ridgeway High School, in 1927. Over the years she taught school in the North Harrison School System, at Eagleville, the Neelyville school system as well as the Poplar Bluff school system, retiring on July 1, 1976. Mrs. Cornelison was a member of the First Christian Church. She became a lifetime member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in Oct. 1940, and received a Founders Award for 60 years of service on April 24, 2000. She was also a member of the Poplar Bluff Preceptor Beta Delta; the Order of the Eastern Star 344; and the Poplar Bluff Porcelain Artist Guild.
On April 14, 1934, she married Bert Roe Cornelison, in Troy, Kansas. He preceded her in death on Aug. 11, 1984.
Survivors include two sons, Clark F. Cornelison and wife Genelda, of St. Louis and James E. ""Jim"" Cornelison and wife Barbara, of Chicago. Ill.; four grandchildren, Sally Ann Egan and husband Jason, Sue Hannah O'Sullivan and husband T.J., Kari Gutjahr and husband Jeff and Melissa Brydels and husband Dave; and two great-grandchildren, Ben Brydels and Emma Brydels.
An Eastern Star Service will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday with the visitation following until 8 p.m. at Cotrell Funeral Chapel, in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the chapel, with the Rev. John Harwell officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Gardens Cemetery, in Poplar Bluff.
