George Young, Jr., 86, of Poplar Bluff died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Young, the son of the late Ruth (Whitehead) and George Young, Sr. was born March 14, 1922, in Poplar Bluff. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, in Poplar Bluff and had retired from the nursing service department of the Veteran's Hospital, in Chicago. Mr. Young was a World War II veteran of the United States Army and received 3 bronze Stars, a European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon and four overseas bars for his service. He was a gifted artist whose artistic abilities were recognized even as a young child. After retirement he continued to paint and produce vibrant landscapes of his European experiences. In 2001, he was honored as the featured Artist of the Month at the Margaret Harwell Art Museum, in Poplar Bluff

Mr. Young is survived by two brothers, Thomas Young, of Little Rock, Ark. and Jerry Paul Young, of Santa Monica, Calif.; six nieces, nine nephews and a host of relatives and friends.

Visitation will be from 12 noon - 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary with Dr. Quincy Keeble, Sr. officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at the City Cemetery, in Poplar Bluff.
