Mr. George William Poston, 91, of Williamsville, Missouri, passed away Saturday, July 1, 2023, at the Gideon Care Center in Gideon Missouri, with his son Chris at his side.
George was born on a farm in Des Arc, Missouri on June 9, 1932, to Levi and Sarah (Lashley) Poston. He had two brothers, Sheridan Poston, and Curtis Poston and three sisters, Lucille Poston Edwards, Betty Poston Tucker and Sue Poston Weatherford. Around 1936 the family moved to Parma where they continued to farm.
George began his military career in 1949, when he enlisted in U.S. Army. He fought in the Korean War, served two tours of combat duty in Vietnam, and retired from his military career in 1969 with the rank of Sergeant First Class. His tours of duty included Formosa (Taiwan), South Korea, West Germany, South Vietnam, as well as various other posts in the United States. His awards include a National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, a Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Campaign Stars, Three Bronze Star Medals, with one including the V Device notating his meritorious and heroic acts performed during actual combat after being wounded in action.
On March 14, 1954, he married the love of his life Mary Magdalene Hayes in Braggadocio, Missouri. They raised three sons, Courtney Warren Poston, Mark William Poston, and Christopher Lee Poston.
After retiring from the Army, the family settled on an 80-acre parcel west of Poplar Bluff and started living the farm life. In 1974, George and Mary sold the 80-acre farm and bought a 160-acre farm east of Williamsville. George was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed farming, riding his tractor, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by two sons, Warren Poston of Freeport, Florida, and Chris (Elizabeth) Poston of Williamsville; four grandchildren, Jeb, Jason, and Justin Poston and Daniel Dixon; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary, his son Mark and his two brothers and three sisters.
The family would like to express sincere appreciation for the care that George received from the professional staff at Southern Care and Comfort In-Home Agency; Winchester Nursing Center at Bernie, Missouri and Gideon Care Center at Gideon, Missouri and Elara Caring of Dexter, Missouri.
A visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm Friday, July 7th at Cotrell Willow Ridge Funeral Chapel in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will begin at 10:30 am Saturday at the chapel with Rev. Jim Schremp officiating. A burial with full military honors will be at the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery.
