Fay Carpenter, 66, of Poplar Bluff, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 3006, in Butler County as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Mrs. Carpenter was born Dec. 18, 1939, in Charleston, Mo., to the late Jess E. and Necy P. (Smith) Short. She was a homemaker and an active member of the Fountain of Grace Church, in Poplar Bluff where she served as Sunday School Teacher. Mrs. Carpenter enjoyed spending time with her family, entertaining her grandchildren, playing bingo and shopping at Wal-Mart.

On April 8, 1962, she married James A. ""Jim"" Carpenter, in Poplar Bluff. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include her daughter, Sarah Louise Todd and husband George, of Dayton, Ohio; three sons, James Floyd Carpenter, of Portageville, John Paul Carpenter, of Poplar Bluff and Joseph William Carpenter, of Harviell; 7 grandchildren, Joshua Carpenter, Cody Lee Carpenter, George Christopher Todd, Phillip Andrew Todd, Colton Carpenter and Clayton Carpenter; two sisters, Betty and Ethel; and a brother Jesse Short, of Poplar.

A granddaughter, Carley Jo Carpenter died Sunday from injuries she sustained in the accident.

Her adopted mother, Sarah Elizabeth Walls, who raised her from the age of two when her mother died, preceded Mrs. Carpenter.

Visitation will be from 5 - 8 p.m. Wednesday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel, in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Calvary's Grace Church, 844 Cedar St., in Poplar Bluff, with the Rev. Joseph Carpenter officiating, and the Rev. David Tharp and the Rev. Doris Swartz assisting. Burial will be at the Kinsey Cemetery, in Butler County.
