Edward Harold Carter, 85, a long-time resident of Butler County passed away Monday, Dec. 31, 2007 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, in St. Louis.
Mr. Carter was born May 9, 1922, in Harviell. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II. Mr. Carter participated in the European Normandy Invasion and later in the Rhineland Campaign, in Holland where he was awarded a Purple Heart, the Gold Cluster and the Battle Star. After retiring from the Army he was employed by the Coca Cola Bottling Company, in Poplar Bluff. In 1947, Mr. Carter graduated from Bluff City Brownsville Business College and was employed by Eller Oelson Construction Company, in Malden. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, in Poplar Bluff, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.
On Feb. 22, 1946, he was married to Velma Aileen Harwell, in Poplar Bluff. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Susan Patterson, of St. Louis and Debra Colter and husband Carl, of Poplar Bluff; a son, Bert Thomas Carter and wife Faye Ella, of Poplar Bluff; two grandchildren, Janna Gayle Carter and Tyler Edward Patterson, of Poplar Bluff and St. Louis; and several nieces and nephews.
His parents, Bert T. and Mary (Morgan) Carter, daughter, Carol Ann Carter, grandson, Brian Lee Halter and seven sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.
Visitation will be from 6 - 8 p.m. Thursday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel, in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Chapel with the Rev. Jean Dicken and the Rev. Gary Cochran officiating. Entombment with full military honors will be at the Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, in Poplar Bluff.
