Delbert Silas Dennis, Sr., 88, of Poplar Bluff, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006 at the John J. Pershing VA Medical center, in Poplar Bluff.
Mr. Dennis was born June 29, 1918, in Lawrenceburg, Ky., to the late Erestus and Leona (Brown) Dennis. He was a member of the First General Baptist Church and retired in 1975 from Foote's Farm Equipment. Mr. Dennis a World War II veteran of the United States Army. Serving in the Normandy Campaign, the Northern France Campaign and the Rhineland Campaign, he was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with three (3) Bronze Service Stars, an American Threatre Ribbon, a Good Conduct Medal, a World War II Victory Medal, a Combat Infantry Badge and a Purple Heart. He was also a lifetime member of the D.A.V.
On July 3, 1947, he married Lila I. Magruder, in Battle Creek, MI. She survives.
Other survivors include two children, Kathe Hapanowicz and husband Robert and Delbert Dennis, Jr. and wife Rebecca, all of Poplar Bluff; four grandchildren, Amy Whelchel and husband William, Delbert Dennis, III and Angela Dennis, of Poplar Bluff and Elizabeth Sanders and husband Randy, of South Carolina; and six great-grandchildren, Shelby, Chelsy, Wesley, and Caleb Whelchel, of Poplar Bluff and Layton and Lydian Sanders, of South Carolina.
A grandson Daniel Dennis, five brothers and three sisters also preceded Mr. Dennis in death.
Visitation will be from 6 - 8 p.m. Friday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel, in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the chapel, with the Rev. Bob Case officiating and the Rev. Keith Luke assisting. Burial, with full military honors will be at the City Cemetery, in Poplar Bluff.
