Cloyd George Cook, 100-year-old WW II veteran who resided at John J. Pershing VA Hospital, Poplar Bluff, Missouri, passed away Saturday, September 3, 2022.
He was born February 15, 1922, in Aquilla, Missouri to George and Mary Asbell Cook. He spent his early childhood in Aquilla and later in Qulin. He served two tours with Civil Conservation Corps in his teenage years. He enlisted in the US Army in 1942 and served in eight foreign countries, with the 94th Infantry under General George Patton.
Mr. Cook was employed by Foremost Foods for 33 years and farmed near Rombauer, Missouri. He was a devout Christian and a member of the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff for over 50 years. He served as the Sunday School Superintendent and taught adult Sunday School Classes. He was an outdoors man and fishing was high on his priority list.
He married Opal Fern Camden, October 23, 1948, in St. Louis, Missouri. After moving to Butler County, Missouri, they raised seven children.
Survivors include Claudette Gail Black of Willard, MO, Cloyd Cook Jr. (Betty), Ft. Madison, Iowa, Judy Ann Jones (Larry) of Dearing, Georgia, and Amanda House (Daron) of Poplar Bluff; fifteen grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Also, surviving are sisters-in-law, Mary Bates (Harry), Opal Camden, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was a friend to anyone he met and was affectionately known as Dad, Grandpa, Papa, Sunshine and sometimes Cookie by both friends and family.
He is preceded in death by his wife, sons, James, Lindell, Keith and infant son, parents, George and Mary Cook, brother, James Thomas Cook, sisters, Marguerite Stafford, Willadene Fulkerson, Launa Link, Mary Lois Hamann, and stepsister Nelda Anderson.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 11, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. and Monday, September 12, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at Cotrell Willow Ridge Funeral & Cremation Services in Poplar Bluff. Funeral service will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, September 12, 2022. Burial will be in the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery.
Lunch will be served at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 1600 South 11th Street, Poplar Bluff, MO 63901, compliments of Mt. Zion and Palace of Praise.
Memorials may be made to Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church.
