Carl John Stubblefield

Carl John Stubblefield, 86, of Poplar Bluff passed away Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008 at John J. Pershing VA Medical Center, in Poplar Bluff.

Mr. Stubblefield was born June 19, 1921, in Myrtle, Mo. He was a member of Fellowship General Baptist Church, and had retired from John J. Pershing VA Medical Center as a surgical nurse. He had also worked as an L.P.N. on the 5th floor Nursing Home section of John J. Pershing, and at the Poplar Bluff Job Corps Center as well. Mr. Stubblefield was a World War II veteran of the United States Army, and later retired from the United States Air Force Reserves. He was a recipient of an American Theater Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal with one Bronze Battle Star, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart and Victory Medal. Mr. Stubblefield is also honored on the Wall of Valor at the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center. He was a member of the Poplar Bluff Masonic Lodge 209; past member of Three Rivers Shrine Club and a former Three Rivers Shrine Clown. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan.

On Oct. 6, 1943, he married Billie Margaret Sparks, in St. Louis. She survives.

Other survivors include his daughter, Judith Ann Bollig and her husband Bill, of Poplar Bluff; two sons, Carl John Stubblefield II, of Nixa and D. Craig Stubblefield and his wife Karen, of Tupelo, Miss.; a sister, Imogene Todd, of Poplar Bluff; two brothers, James Howard ""Jim"" Stubblefield and his wife Norma, of Boston, Mass. and Charles Kenneth Stubblefield and his wife Joyce, of South Haven, Miss.; and 7 grandchildren, Stacy Atkinson, of Poplar Bluff, Angela Ormsby, of Doniphan, Melissa Gassaway, of Benton, Ark., Tiffany Shockley, of Washington, Breanna Stiner, of West Plains, Heather Perry, of Springfield and Tami McFarland, of St. Louis; and 14 great-grandchildren, Alexa Atkinson, Lariat Ormsby, Lane Ormsby, Jessie Hamilton, Gage Gassaway, Destini Shockley, Mikaylah Shockley, Stacie Shockley, Jordan Shockley, Caleb McFarland, Kyle McFarland, Andrew Stiner, Bryson Stiner and Hoyt Stiner.

Mr. Stubblefield was preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Laura Stubblefield, of West Plains, Mo.

A Masonic Service will begin at 6:00 p.m. Sunday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel, in Poplar Bluff with the visitation following. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Fellowship General Baptist Church with the Rev. Byron Beck officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday at Missouri State Veteran's Cemetery, in Bloomfield.
