Carl R. Hicks, 78, of Independence, Mo., died Monday, April 23, 2007 at the Hillside Village Care Center, in DeSoto, Kans.
Mr. Hicks, the son of A. A. and Leota Grace (Tebo) Hicks was born July 29, 1928, in Piedmont. Raised in Poplar Bluff, he lived most of his life in Kansas City and Independence, Mo. Mr. Hicks was a WWII veteran of the United States Army and a life time member of the V.F.W. Post 1000, in Independence and the American Legion Post 153, in Poplar Bluff. He had retired from the Santa Fe Railroad. Mr. Hicks enjoyed spending time with his family and attending family gatherings, traveling and repairing lawn mowers and small engines.
On Aug. 29, 1951, he married Velma Gilbert, in Piggott, Ark. She preceded him in death on Sept. 13, 1968. On Jan. 1, 1976, he married Clorene L. Barrows, in Kansas City. She survives.
Other survivors include a stepdaughter, Rosalee B. Snider, of Lanexa, Kans.; several step grandchildren; a brother, Ralph L. Hicks and wife Thelma, of Poplar Bluff; a sister-in-law, Charlene Hicks, of Poplar Bluff; a brother-in-law, Charles Williams, of Albuquerque, NM; and several nieces and nephews.
His mother, Leota Hicks Gibbs, father, A. A. Hicks, sisters, Virginia Williams and Pearl Jarvis, stepson, Gerald R. Barrows, brothers, Richard Hicks, Edward Hicks, William Hicks and Joseph B. Hicks preceded Mr. Hicks in death.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel, in Poplar Bluff. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Black Creek Cemetery, in Butler County with the Rev. Jimmy Gilbert officiating.
